The Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s new opera house is suitably located on Fenyang Road, famous for its numerous musical shops and venues, in the Xuhui District of Shanghai.

The completed concert and opera house is a 5-story complex with 3 underground floors and 2 floors above ground, with a total construction area of 31,926 sqm. In addition to the 1,200-seat opera house, there are four classrooms for rehearsals of opera, orchestra, chorus and folk music. This project will, for the first time, give music students an opportunity to rehearse on a fully equipped opera stage. This extensive project uses a remarkable 130 sets of SERAPID LinkLifts, including:

• Orchestra lifts using eight sets of the standard LL100 and travel of 6.6m,

• Rear stage transitional lift using eight sets of LL30-MAG1,

• Orchestra compensation lifts using four sets of LL50R-MAG1,

• Curtain lift using ten sets of LL100-MAG3, with a travel of 8.2m,

• 100 sets of LL50-MAG1 for side stage transitional lifts, rear stage compensation lifts, and side stage compensation lifts.

SERAPID’s Intercalaire technology proved invaluable to the project. Since the maximum travel of the standard LinkLift is 8 meters, the Intercalaire, by “resetting” the links, can extend the maximum stroke considerably; in this case, it allows travel of 8.2m for the curtain lift, but has been used in numerous other projects to extend the stroke, for instance, up to 18m for the Theatre des Oeillets in Ivry, Paris. The Intercalaire can be used for platforms with different configurations, different numbers of columns, it can be used for platforms guided either by T guides or scissors and adds another level of stability for installations on cruise ships. SERAPID is proud to add this distinctive project to its growing portfolio and is grateful to be able to support arts education and the communities they serve.
